1. Mormon witnessed a great evil come upon his people the Nephites where the Nephites have become a wicked people than the Lamanites. The gravity surrounding the collapse of the complex Nephite society seems inevitable and perplexing. The collapse cause one to ponder why they couldn’t stop before it was too late. “Behold, the pride of this nation, or the people of the Nephites, hath proven their destruction except they should repent” (Mor 8.27) The Great and Spacious building falls because of Pride and pride leads a people to annihilation through war. War is an abomination because it removes man from his humanity returning him to a beast like state, savage. “I fear lest the Spirit hath ceased strive with them”, “they are also seeking to put down all power and authority which cometh from God”, “and they are denying the Holy Ghost.” (Mor 8:28) The Kingdom of God is organization and administer through the promptings and revelations of the Holy Ghost. The complex organization works beautifully because of the Holy Ghost. Without the Holy Spirit man could not affective administer to the affairs of the Kingdom. The tragedy of the Nephites occurred when they rejected the Holy Ghost.
2. Mormon receives word from Amoron that the Lamanites have taken the tower of Sherrizah and have many prisoners and many slain. “They feed the women upon the flesh of their husbands” (Mor 9.8) However, the Nephite people of Moriantum exceeded the Lamanites in wickedness by raping the Lamanite female prisoners, torturing their bodies, and then devouring their bodies like ravenous wild dogs. The sheer veracity of the Nephite actions demonstrates no rational. The once peaceful civilization of delightsome people were lost in a gross quagmire of filth, the filthy waters of Hell. Mormon declares, “O my beloved son, how can a people like this, that are without civilization” (Mor 9.11) Mormon reveals that only a few years of war had transform the people into a mass of mindless savages, “delight is in so much abomination”. War feeds on itself, cannibalizes, and focuses groups into a singular mode of thought. The only possible out of so much rebellion is Judgment. Mormon states, “How can we expect that God will stay his hand in judgment against us?” (mor 9:14) “O the depravity of my people! They are without order and without mercy”. (Mor 9:18) Mormon predicts that his people will perish like the Jaredites, a people record by Ether on 24 gold plates, delivered by Coriamtur to Mosiah for translation.
3. The right way is not to deny Christ and believe him nor deny the prophets and the law. Obedience to keep the performances and ordinances of God (2 nep 25.30)
4. Nephi saw the gospel coming forth to his people in the last days. The Book of Mormon will speak to the surviving Lamanites declaring truth, “speak unto them out of the ground, and their speech shall be low out of the dust, and their voice shall be as one that hath a familiar spirit:” (2 Ne 26.16).
5. The Book of Mormon power to convert dismisses attempts to stop the work of the Lord. Nephi states, “the multitude of their terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away” (2 ne 26.18) The Lord is inviting all the world to come and partake of his gospel liken it to “Milk and Honey, without money and without price”.
6. A marvelous work and wonder is proceeding in the last dispensation. The Lord states, “that I may remember my covenants which I have made unto the children of men, that I may set my hand again the second time to recover my people, which are of the house of Israel” (2 ne 29:1) The consistency of God demonstrates he is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Therefore, we can have faith that the great Jehovah will save us in the last days. “I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham that I would remember his seed forever” (2 Ne 29.14) Amen.
