Researcher

Fact: 1. The Sahara is the largest desert on the planet, 9,000,000 square kilometers. The Sahara occupies a third of Africa.

2. There are water wells in the Acacus desert. Average rainfall is 0 to 25 mm per year. There are several lakes in the desert in the Awbari Sand Sea.

Geothermal electricity production in Kenya

FactReference Link

1. Kenya generates over 15% of its electricity production from geothermal

2. 2007, Geo MW production was 128.8

3. The Rift area of Key is the most cost-effective regiion for geothermal electricity production. Kenya Electricity Generating Company has two plants, Olkaria I (45 MW) and Olkaria II (65 MW) and a third private plant Olkaria III (48 MW). Plans are to increase capacity to 576 MW by 2017, covering 25% of needs.

4. The Rift value is 120 kilometers from Nairobi. Olkaria II turbine hall is made of steel and has modern building materials; uses modern canned pumps; and modern cooling tower for a small footprint.(Reference Link)

5. Kenya is the 6th producer of geothermal electrical power and has the potential to produce 6000 megawatts. (Reference Link)

6. 14 regions in Kenya can be used to produce electricity. Hydro electric has been viewed as cheap, but changes in climate are shifting interest to geothermal power.

5. Kenya geo power production costs 5 cents per kilowatt with a life of 25 years. The wells are drilled 3 kilometers into the ground, steam passes through turbines, the steam is condensed and pumped back into the ground. In 2011, Kenya produces 115 MW. Starting in 2012, 140 MW every year will be put into production. Silas Simiyu sees the possiblity of 7000 mw maximum production. 21% of the Kenya energy is produced by geo thermal power.
